Rolex Milgauss - Watch History

 The Rolex Milgauss was a specialty watch that was designed to meet the needs of those that worked for long periods in electromagnetic fields (which can disturb the movement of watches) such as power plants. Rolex introduced the Milgauss in 1954 as the model 6541 and had a movement that was shielded with anti magnetic alloys as well as iron shielding. Another model of the Milgauss is the 1019. 

Traditionally, watches are considered resistant to magnets if they can withstand an exposure of 60 Gauss (unit of magnetic flux). The Rolex Milgauss is rated to withstand 1000 Gauss (hence the name). This over engineering is a testament to the Rolex commitment to durability in extreme circumstances.  

Originally, the Rolex Milgauss line shared much in common aesthetically with the Rolex Submariner line. The Milgauss only had two models, the 6541 and the 1019 before its final year of production in 1988 due to lack of interest. The earlier model Milgauss is now highly sought after in the Rolex community due to the small number of production. Recently, a Rolex has released a new version of the Milgauss with a new movement, bezel, dial, as well as other aesthetic changes.
